Periodontitis: to treat or not? Here’s what dentists say!

Periodontitis is a dangerous disease for your teeth! Also known as “beautiful teeth disease,” also called the “silent killer,” it affects the gums and bone structure (teeth become loose and then fall out). The causes of periodontal disease include poor oral hygiene, smoking, genetic predisposition, diabetes, stress and other factors. It is important to take care of your oral health by regularly brushing and flossing your teeth and visiting your dentist regularly to prevent or treat periodontal disease.   Treatment of periodontitis and periodontal disease in Chisinau Periodontal disease can be effectively treated and controlled, but it is a chronic inflammatory disease (affecting the tissues surrounding the tooth) that requires constant attention and long-term care. Treatment for periodontal disease may include professional oral hygiene procedures, antibiotic treatment, or other special measures recommended by your dentist. Doctors at the Dentus•Dentino Dental Center (Bucharest, sector 1, bd. Ion Mihalache, 62), with over 15 years of experience, treat the most complicated cases and offer effective solutions for such problems.

According to the WHO report, 46.4% of Romanian residents over the age of 35 have severe periodontitis (teeth move, periodontal pockets appear, there is a risk of tooth loss).

Difference between periodontitis and periodontal disease

Both are diseases of the periodontium, the tissue that supports the teeth. They vary in severity and treatment methods. Treating periodontitis in the early stages can help prevent the disease from progressing. If left untreated, these diseases can lead to tooth loss!

Periodontitis (it’s like a cold):

  • gum inflammation caused by dental bacteria
  • bleeding when brushing teeth, red and swollen gums, bad breath
  • successfully treated by removing tartar, proper oral hygiene and curettage (cleaning periodontal pockets)

Periodontal disease (it’s like pneumonia):

  • advanced stage of untreated periodontitis with destruction of the bone supporting the teeth
  • gum recession, loose teeth, deep periodontal pockets and abscesses (accumulation of pus at the level of the gum or tooth root)
  • can be maintained/stabilized with complex treatment.

Symptoms of periodontal disease

→ Change in gum color (from pink to red)

→ Bleeding gums while brushing teeth

→ Gums are inflamed, swollen, red or tender

→ Gum retraction (exposure of tooth roots)

→ Presence of periodontal pockets (deep spaces that form between the gums and teeth that lead to infections)

→ Mobility and displacement of teeth (looseness)

→ Pain or discomfort when chewing

→ Bad breath (halitosis)

→ The appearance of pus around the teeth or in periodontal pockets.

Causes of periodontal disease

The main cause of periodontal disease is lack of regular teeth cleaning. Normally, the oral cavity is home to about 700 different types of harmless bacteria. If we do not brush our teeth regularly and do not maintain proper oral hygiene, the number of bacteria reaches more than 100 billion and the result is → gingivitis (inflammation of the gums caused by bacteria). Without treatment, the disease progresses and enters the next stage → periodontitis.

↝ Poor oral hygiene (lack of regular brushing, not using dental floss, not visiting the dentist regularly). Bacterial plaque appears, and later – tartar (forms on the surface of the teeth and leads to the development of periodontal diseases).

↝ Smoking is a major risk factor for periodontal disease because it can reduce blood flow to the gums, thereby weakening their ability to fight bacterial infections.

↝ Genetic factor: If relatives suffer from this disease, there is a high probability that other family members will also develop periodontal problems.

↝ Diabetes, autoimmune diseases, hormonal disorders, psychological conditions.

↝ Poor nutrition

Basic tips:

– Practice good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily.

– Twice a year: visit the dentist for regular checkups and professional oral hygiene (removal of bacterial plaque and tartar).

– Try to quit smoking and switch to a healthy lifestyle

– Watch for signs of periodontal disease and contact your dentist immediately if you notice bleeding when brushing your teeth, red and swollen gums, sensitivity, or that your teeth are loose.

Periodontal disease leads to tooth loss, but it can be prevented and successfully treated.
